Wichita Wind Surge News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Wichita left nine men on base and were just one for nine with runners in scoring position in tonight's ballgame. Corpus Christi took advantage of the cold Surge bats and piled on the runs. The Wind Surge were defeated by the Hooks by a score of 8-2. The Hooks now lead the series three games to one.
The Wind Surge scored the first run of the ball game in the top of the second. The bases were loaded off a lead-off Aaron Sabato double, a walk of Seth Gray and a Dalton Shuffield single. Willie Joe Garry Jr. then grounded into a double play, but Sabato still managed to score a run by reaching home from third during the play.
Wind Surge first baseman Sabato had to leave the game in the top of the fourth. He was hit by a pitch in the hand and was pulled by the training staff. Alex Isola came in the ballgame to replace him.
Corpus Christi found themselves in possession of a two-run lead by end of the fifth inning. The Hooks managed to tie the ball game on their own accord by means of a C.J. Stubbs RBI double to left field. The two runs after came on a fly ball to center field by Will Wagner. Wagner's hit bounced on the warning track and landed on the other side of the wall for what should have been an automatic double and only one run scored. The umpires came together and ruled it a two-run home run, even after the appeals of multiple Surge outfielders. Wind Surge Manager Ramon Borrego was ejected from the game after he came out on the field to argue his case.
The Hooks added on to their lead in the later innings of the ball game. Jacob Melton hit a solo home run on a fly ball to left field in the bottom of the sixth. Zach Daniels grounded out to first base that drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh. Wichita committed two errors in the bottom of the eighth that allowed three unearned runs to score for the Hooks.
Wichita showed up too little and too late in the top of the ninth. They scored their second run of the ballgame off a fielding error committed by the Hooks.
Marco Raya made his tenth start of the season for the Wind Surge. He pitched three and one third scoreless innings and only gave up two hits. He struck out three batters and walked none. Reggie Grace was credited with the loss and his record falls to (1-3).
The Corpus Christi Hooks starting pitcher Ryan Gusto pitched six innings where he gave up one run off five hits. He struck out six batters and walked one more. He earned the win, and his record improves to (5-2).
The Wichita Wind Surge, who are now tied for first place, fall to (33-28, 61-68) and the Corpus Christi Hooks improve to (32-29, 65-65).
NOTES: Yoyner Fajardo extended his reached base streak to 23 consecutive games. The streak is the longest of any Wind Surge player this season. Dalton Shuffield now has a six-game hit streak. Willie Joe Garry Jr. was ejected in the top of the seventh inning. The Surge have left 31 men on base through the first four games of the series.
