Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (19-30) drop the series opener 5-3 to the Montgomery Biscuits (23-26) Monday night from Bragan Field.

Austin Pruitt (W, 3-4) hurled six frames in a winning decision allowing one run (earned) while walking a batter and fanning five men in his start for Montgomery. Craig Stem (L, 1-1) tossed three innings in his spot start for the Suns surrendering three runs (one earned) while not walking a batter and striking out two.

The scoring would begin the top of the second after a pair of singles from Johnny Field and Patrick Leonard, set the table for Justin O'Conner's two-run double that leaped Montgomery out to a 2-0 lead. Now with two runners on, Boog Powell laced a RBI double to right that pushed their advantage to 3-0 through one inning of play.

Flashing to the bottom of the fourth and the Suns got on the board on Sharif Othman's RBI single plated major league rehabber Jeff Mathis, after his double placed him at second to start off the frame. Jacksonville trailed 3-1 through four innings at Bragan Field.

The first of the fifth featured a lead off triple for Daniel Robertson, which allowed next batter Cameron Seitzer to cash in with a RBI sacrifice fly off of Suns reliever Casey McCarthy.

To the seventh, with Jacksonville reliever Juancito Martinez on the mound, he would walk the first three Biscuits to the plate to load the bases. Tyler Goeddel then would ground into a RBI fielder's choice to send home Robertson and push the Biscuits advantage to 5-1.

Moving to the bottom of the ninth, with a pair of runners on, Carlos Lopez singled to left to drive in Othman and cut the deficit to 5-2. With Danny Black on third, Austin Nola arched a run scoring sacrifice fly that brought home Black and made the tally 5-3. Biscuits reliever Parker Markel got Zack Cox to ground out and end the ballgame.

The Suns and Biscuits will square off again Tuesday night from Bragan Field with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. ET. The Suns will send out righty Jake Esch (3-3, 3.04 ERA) while the Biscuits will counter with right-hander Jared Mortensen (3-3, 3.27 ERA).
