Shuckers Suffer Worst Loss Of Season In 10-0 Defeat From Barons
June 1, 2015 - Southern League (SL1)
Biloxi Shuckers News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Biloxi Shuckers' offense had no answer against Birmingham Barons' starting pitcher Myles Jaye on Monday night, suffering a 10-0 defeat at Regions Field. The Shuckers tied a season-low with three hits and lost by five or more runs for the first time during their 54-game road trip to start the season. Despite the loss, Biloxi remains three games better than the Mississippi Braves in the South standings and the first half magic number shrinks to 17 thanks to a Braves loss.
Birmingham (24-25) grabbed an early lead in the bottom-half of the first inning when an RBI groundout by Brian Fletcher scored Tim Anderson to give the Barons a 1-0 lead.
Biloxi (30-20) squandered early chances to hop in the game, but left runners stranded in scoring position in the first, second and third innings. On the night, the Shuckers left eight men on base and ended up 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Hobbs Johnson (L, 3-2) fell short of his first quality start of the season, allowing four runs in 5.1 innings. The southpaw did strike out five, compared to just one walk, on 96 pitches - 68 for strikes.
Biloxi's bullpen struggled in the opener after dominating the Chattanooga Lookouts for four games. Jaye Chapman (0.2 IP, H) allowed two inherited runners to score in the sixth after coming in for Johnson, Martin Viramontes (1.1 IP, 6 R, 4 H, 2 BB, SO) and Manny Barreda 0.2 IP, H, BB) allowed six runs to score in 2.2 innings.
Michael Reed's (0x4) hitting and on-base streaks were snapped at 10 after failing to reach base on Monday night.
The Shuckers will look to even the series at a game apiece with RHP Jorge Lopez (3-2, 3.92) taking the mound against RHP Mark Blackmar (0-3, 4.59). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to www.biloxishuckers.com.
The Shuckers will open MGM Park with the inaugural game on Saturday, June 6 at 7:10 p.m. vs. the Mobile BayBears. MGM Park gates will open at 5:00 pm on Opening Night so that fans can come early to roam the facility and soak up the excitement. The game is sold out, but Individual game tickets remain for June 7-10. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.biloxishuckers.com, www.ticketmaster.com, at the Shuckers Team Store or by calling 800-745-3000.
