Hagerstown Suns News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Suns were not able to break through offensively and put together only five hits in their 7-0 loss to the Hickory Crawdads at LP Frans Stadium Tuesday.
The defeat was Hagerstown's (32-44, 2-4) seventh shutout loss of the season and the fourth straight loss overall.
Hickory (46-26, 5-1) got the scoring started in the second inning against Suns starter Jake Irvin(L, 4-5). After a walk and an error with one away, Matt Whatley doubled into centerfield to put the Crawdads on the board. Frainyer Chaves then followed with a bunt single that ended up bringing in two more runs after an error.
Then, in the third inning, it was the long ball that got the Crawdads offense going. Tyreque Reed and Pedro Gonzalez each hit solo shots against Irvin to push the score to 5-0. Irvin would end up going five innings on the hill, allowing four earned runs and striking out two.
On the pitching side for Hickory, it was Cole Winn who got the start and put together his best outing of the season. Winn tossed four scoreless frames and allowed only two hits as the Suns offense never got a runner past first base against him.
Ronny Henriquez (W, 2-4) then entered out of the Crawdads bullpen in the fifth and struck out six batters over three scoreless frames. The only Hagerstown offensive rally came in the eighth when Jackson Cluff and Tyler Cropley starting the inning with back-to-back singles against Lucas Jacobsen. However, the Crawdads lefty retired the next three hitters.
The Hagerstown offense was quiet all night. The Suns did not pick up an extra-base hit and struck out 12 times as a team while only managing to get two runners into scoring position in the loss.
The Suns used only one pitcher out of their bullpen - Ryan Williamson - and he pitched well over three innings, but did allow two runs in the seventh when Sherten Apostel got him for a two-run home run.
The Suns will wrap up their series in Hickory and their seven-game road trip tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. RHP Angel Guillen (0-3, 3.32 ERA) will make his second start of the season for Hagerstown while RHP Tyree Thompson (3-3, 3.06 ERA) will get the ball for the Crawdads.
After the road trip ends, the Suns return to Municipal Stadium Thursday for a seven-game homestand against the Delmarva Shorebirds and Greensboro Grasshoppers. The stretch includes plenty of promotions, including Thirsty Thursday, Ghostbusters/80's Night, Sunday Funday, and Salute to America.
