Suns Announce Essay Contest Winners

JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Jacksonville Suns are proud to announce the winners for the 2014 Suns Essay Contest that was held over the past few months with Duval County Public Schools. All Duval County 4th, 8th and 10th grade students were invited to write a 300-500 word essay on their personal hero and a winner would be selected from each school and entered as their respective schools entrant into the countywide contest. One winner for Duval County has been selected from each age group and the winners are:

Lelaina Rose a 4th grader from Pine Forest School of the Arts was the winner of the 4th Grade Division for writing her essay on her classmate, Arik. Lelaina will be presented with a $50 Suns Gift Card and a Personalized Suns Jersey.

Our 8th grade winner of the Suns Essay Contest is Julian Rubiano from James Weldon Johnson College Prep Middle School. Julian wrote a touching essay on his mother who moved from Colombia and became a U.S. Citizen. Julian will receive a Personalized Suns Jersey and a $75 Suns Gift Card.

Cameron Self, a student at Atlantic Coast High School, was our 10th grade champion for his essay on his hero, NFL Hall of Famer Walter Payton. For winning the high school category Cameron will receive a $1,000 college scholarship, personalized Suns Jersey and $100 Suns Gift Card.

All three winners will be recognized on Bragan Field before a Suns game during the 2014 season.

Suns Owner and President Peter D. Bragan Jr. has long been an advocate for reading in Duval County Public Schools. Since the late 80's he has personally visited quite a few elementary schools with the Catch Reading Fever with the Suns program, which features Casey's Challenge that encourages students to memorize the famous baseball poem Casey at the Bat for a special prize.
