Birmingham Barons News Release

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons lost their second game in a row to the Tennessee Smokies, falling by a score of 4-1 at Smokies Park.

The Barons broke a scoreless tie in the fourth on Chris Curley's first home run of the year, a solo shot to center field, taking a 1-0 lead. It would be the lone run allowed by starter Matt Loosen who scattered four hits and struck out seven over 5.0 IP.

Chris Beck (2-5, 4.93) pitched well for most of the afternoon but ran into trouble in the sixth and seventh innings. A Charles Cutler RBI single in the sixth tied the game at 1-1. An inning later, Anthony Giansanti's solo home run put the Smokies ahead for good at 2-1. Beck was removed later in the inning in favor of reliever Nelvin Fuentes who allowed a sacrifice fly to Wes Darvill, pushing the lead to 3-1. Beck allowed three runs on eight hits over 6.1 IP.

The Smokies tacked on an insurance run in the eighth, getting an RBI bunt single by Jae-Hoon Ha to take a 4-1 lead they would not relinquish. Hunter Cervenka picked up his first save of the season, striking out Micah Johnson with tworunners on in the ninth to end the game.

Chris Curley and Dan Wagner each finished with two hits apiece, going 2-for-4.

With the loss, the Barons fell to 12-19 on the season while Tennessee improved to 18-14. The Barons will look to rebound tomorrow night as RHP Myles Jaye (0-3, 4.65) takes the hill against RHP Dae-Eun Rhee (1-1, 3.72). First pitch is scheduled for a 6:15 PM CDT on Wednesday.
