Sundbye Named CHL Athletic Trainer Of The Year

Oklahoma City - Oklahoma City Blazers athletic trainer Wade Sundbye was named the Central Hockey League Athletic Trainer of the Year, the CHL and Blazers announced today.

Sundbye, in his 11th season with the Blazers, is an employee of McBride Clinic in Oklahoma City. During the hockey season, he provides any and all of the athletic training services for the Blazers including: initial evaluation and treatment of injuries, referrals if necessary, physical therapy as well as managing and preventing injuries throughout the season.

When not serving as the athletic trainer for the Blazers he serves as a Staff Athletic Trainer for McBride Clinic. Sundbye's off season duties include providing physical therapy at the McBride Clinic as well as evaluation and follow up care for several high school athletes in communities that surround Oklahoma City.

He began his career as an athletic trainer with Western New Mexico University in 1991. He has worked at a variety of events including: professional bull riding and rodeo, professional golf tournaments, with the Oklahoma Storm of the United States Basketball League and American Softball Association tournaments including the World Cup of Softball.

"I've coached for 34 years and Wade is the best athletic trainer that I have worked with," said Blazers head coach Doug Sauter. "He understands what team work is and he has certainly earned the respect of his players and his peers in the Central Hockey League.

"It's an honor to be named by my peers for this award," said Sundbye. "The level of professionalism of the athletic trainers in our league is very high and I'm humbled that they have voted for me to win this award. It's nice to be associated with an organization such as the Blazers and I'm glad that reflects well on them as well as McBride Clinic."

Sundbye is married to his wife of 16 years Marcella and they have four children; Cole 15, Logan 13, Drew 9, Sydney 6. He and his family enjoy outdoor activities including hunting and fishing. Sundbye works as a coach with the OKC Bronco Homeschool baseball and Oklahoma Patriots Homeschool football teams.

The Blazers round out their regular season with two home games this week. Thursday, the Blazers tangle with the Mississippi RiverKings at 7:05 p.m. The regular season finale is Friday against the Wichita Thunder. Faceoff is 7:35 p.m. at the Ford Center.
