Sundogs Team Notes

March 17, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Arizona Sundogs News Release

LEAVITT THE RUNAWAY FAVORITE - It's a pretty safe bet, although not final, that Alex Leavitt will win the CHL scoring title. He leads Laredo's Jeff Bes by 13 points and also has two games at hand on the Bucks captain. Leavitt would actually become the SECOND player in history to win both the ECHL and CHL scoring titles. Trevor Jobe won the ECHL's scoring title in 1992-93 with Nashville (161 points) and then the CHL crown in 1996-97 with Wichita (125 points).

SUNDOGS SET NEW FRANCHISE HIGHS - The Sundogs have new franchise highs in wins (35), points (76), goals (267) and road wins (15) in a season, and may not be through re-writing the franchise's record books. Their next power play goal will put them past last season's total of 97 (which led the CHL last season, too), and their next home win will tie last season's total of 21.

NEW ACQUISITIONS - The Sundogs have a few new faces in the lineup, and another pair of brothers on their roster. The Sundogs signed forward Jamie Visser, brother of Jason Visser, to their roster. The Visser brothers are the second pair of brothers to play for the Sundogs at the same time. Jonathan and Cedric Bernier are played the end of last season and parts of this season with the Sundogs. The Bernier brothers are currently teammates with the Wichita Thunder. The Sundogs also signed forward Steve Rymsha this week to a contract, and he's had an immediate impact with his new team, scoring a goal and adding three helpers in his first two games.

THE RED ROCKET IS ON FIRE - Sundogs forward Cory Urquhart was named the CHL's player of the week on Monday, March 17, scoring six goals and adding three assists in the last three Sundogs wins on home ice. Urquhart has been a welcomed addition to the Sundogs, registering points in all but two games since coming over from the Montreal Canadiens organization. Better than that, Urquhart has nine multi-point games in a Sundogs uniform. Urquhart came to the Sundogs on Feb. 20 in exchange for Olivier Latendresse.

END OF ONE SERIES, BEGINNING OF ANOTHER - The Sundogs will, in all likelihood, face either New Mexico or Odessa in round one of the playoffs. The Sundogs need either one standings point earned, or one Scorpions loss in the last week of the regular season to clinch their first-ever division title. The Scorpions have the edge on the Sundogs in the season series with a record of 6-3-2, with the series concluding tomorrow night in Rio Rancho. The Sundogs have fared better against Odessa, winning five of the first eight regular season meetings. The ‘Dogs and Jacks will meet Friday and Saturday to conclude the regular season. Last season, the Scorpions defeated the Sundogs in seven games in the second round of the playoffs.
