Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Second baseman Yurendell de Caster scored on third baseman Jose Hernandez's suicide squeeze with one out in the bottom of the eighth and Indianapolis hung on for a 3-2 win over Louisville in front of 6,863 Tuesday night at Victory Field.
The Indians improve to 62-60 overall and 34-27 at home, while the Bats fall to 62-62 on the season and 28-31 on the road. Wednesday will be the Tribe's 268th consecutive day with a record of .500 or better.
De Caster opened the eighth with an infield single, advanced to second on a groundout, third on a fielding error and raced home on Hernandez's bunt between the mound and first base.
The Indians bullpen nailed it down from there as LHP Juan Perez (2.1 IP, 4 SO) and RHP Bret Prinz (0.2 IP, 1 SO) combined for three scoreless innings. Perez improved to 3-2 with the win, while Prinz notched his fifth save of the campaign.
Bats RHP Ricky Stone (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER) was pinned with the loss, falling to 5-5.
Neither starter -- Louisville RHP Richie Gardner (4.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) or Indianapolis RHP Marty McLeary (6.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO) -- figured in the decision.
The clubs traded runs in the first. Bats RF Chris Dickerson led off the game with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch, while Indians 1B Steven Pearce roped a double to center and eventually trotted home on LF Michael Ryan's base knock to right.
Indianapolis took its first lead of the night in the fourth. Ryan bounced a single up the middle, moved to third on Hernandez's double to right and scored on SS Luis Ordaz's base knock through the left side.
Louisville knotted the affair on CF Jay Bruce's eighth Triple-A dinger in the sixth -- a solo blast to left.
Ryan (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Bruce (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) collected the only multi-hit games from either side.
The teams wrap up the three-game series on Wednesday at 2 p.m. RHP Tom Shearn is scheduled to start for the Bats, while RHP Victor Zambrano is expected to get the nod for the Indians.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 1:40 p.m.
