August 14, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
TODAY'S GAME: Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons open up a four-game series with the Rochester Red Wings from Dunn Tire Park (7:05 p.m.). The Herd enters the series just 3.5 games back of the Wings in the IL Wild Card standings. Buffalo is currently 2-4 on their season-long 10-game homestand. On the mound tonight for Buffalo will be LHP Aaron Laffey. The southpaw rejoins the team after a two-start stint with the Cleveland Indians. Rochester will counter with RHP Jerome Williams.
BIG SERIES: The Bisons are 5-3 against the Red Wings this season and have won five of the last six games against their closest rivals. The teams will play two more series with this four-game set and a four-game set August 31-September 3 at Frontier Field that concludes the 2007 regular season. At 33-26, the Bisons have the 2nd best divisional record in the IL North.
HE'S NO JOKE: LHP Aaron Laffey is back after collecting his first Major League victory. The southpaw defeated the White Sox on Thursday after allowing four runs in 5.2 innings of work. Laffey is undefeated with the Bisons since picking up his first Triple-A win on June 2. Since then, Laffey is 7-0 with a 1.92ERA in 11 games (65.2IP, 51H, 14ER, 14BB, 56K).
THE FRANCHISE: Ben Francisco extended his hit streak to 12 games last night. Since August 2, the outfielder has hit .373 (19-51) with six extra-base hits and nine runs scored. With a .322 average on the season, Francisco is just nine points behind Rochester's Jose Morales (.331) for the top mark in the IL. Francisco is also 6th in the IL with a .384 on-base percentage.
LEAVE âEM ON: RHP Bubbie Buzachero has gotten the Bisons out of many jams this season. The reliever has inherited 20 base runners this year and only one of them has scored. Last night, he stranded a pair of Yankees on the base paths.
LEFTIES RETURN: Along with getting Aaron Laffey today, LHP Jason Stanford rejoins the Herd today. Stanny spent the last two months with the Indians, going 1-1 with a 4.78ERA in eight games and two starts. He returns just 14 strikeouts shy of Rick Reed's Bisons Modern Era record of 290 punch outs. To make room on the roster, LHP Eric DuBose, LHP Rich Rundles and OF Brian Barton were all transferred to Double-A Akron.
THRUWAY SERIES: The Bisons currently lead the 2007 Thruway Cup Series. Buffalo (13-9) is 2.5 games ahead of second place Rochester (11-12) and 3.5 games up on third place Syracuse (13.16). There are just 11 combined Thruway Cup games left.
