Sometimes things just don't go your way.
That was very much the case for the Guelph Storm in Ottawa on Saturday afternoon.
It would be two odd goals and a disallowed tally of their own that would be the difference in the Storm's 4-1 loss to the 67's.
Michael Giugovaz, making his Storm debut in the match-up, put together a solid game, turning aside 29 of 33 shots, while Ottawa's netminder Leo Lazarev saw 24 shots.
Luke Burghardt registered the Storm's lone-goal in the opening period, while the 67's had four different goal scorers in the win.
Things didn't start off great, with Giugovaz misplaying a puck coming in off the boards leaving an open net for Travis Barron to put the 67's ahead by one just 1:02 into the contest.
With a quick response, Isaac Ratcliffe would make a nice play getting the puck up to Tyler Boston just over a minute later. Boston, despite heavy pressure, would be able to make a pretty feed to a streaking Burghardt. Burhardt, making no mistake, tied the game up at one, getting the Storm on the board 2:19 into the game.
Following early markers from both clubs, the remainder of the opening frame would feature end-to-end play, with either side having chances to step ahead with the lead.
Moving into the second period, the Storm would be right in the thick of things - playing with energy and effort, paired with two shots off the posts in just the opening half of the frame.
The momentum would swing, though, with Boston receiving a tough boarding call at the 10:02 point of the period. Just six seconds into the man-advantage, Ottawa's Evan de Haan put the 67's ahead, using traffic in front to get one by Giugovaz.
Six minutes later, Nevin Guy would extend the 67's lead to two, scoring his first of the season. Coming up with the initial stop, Giugovaz wouldn't get the complete hold on the rebound, leaving Guy to put a hard shot in for a 3-1 score heading into the final period.
Not too much would change in the third period, with the story being another case of bad luck.
At the 13:30 point of the frame, Boston would feed James McEwan off the rush, with McEwan putting a high shot past Lazarev. The play would be reviewed to ensure the puck did cross the line, and with that, the goal was called back due to a noticed delayed offside.
Just 10 seconds later, the 67's sealed the deal with another odd play. As the puck bounced in front off the end glass, Ottawa's Jeremiah Addison would bat it in out of mid-air to make it a 4-1 final.
The Storm visit the Erie Otters next on Dec. 2 for an 11:00 a.m. start.
