SAGINAW, MI. - On Saturday night, the Saginaw Spirit welcomed the Windsor Spitfires to The Dow Event Center for Movember M en's Cancer Awareness Night. The Saginaw Spirit battled back in a hard fought performance to defeat the Windsor Spitfires 5-3.
At 3:52 of the first period, Aaron Luchuk opened the game's scoring. Markus Soberg cushioned Windsor's lead at the 7:09 mark, with help from Luchuk and Bradley Latour. Evan Cormier was summoned from the Spirit bench to relieve David Ovsjannikov shortly after. Windsor continued in their scoring efforts at the 16:00 mark on a power play goal by Christian Fischer. Saginaw found their scoring legs after Markus Niemelainen registered his first OHL goal at 17:32 of the first period. Jesse Barwell picked up an assist on the play. Windsor led Saginaw heading into the first intermission by a score of 3-1. The Spitfires outshot the Spirit 11-9 in the first period.
In the second period, the Spirit battled back to even things up with their West Division rival. Jesse Barwell got the second period scoring started as he netted his third goal of the season and put the Spirit within reach of the Spitfires' lead. At 13:21 of the second period, Saginaw put the penalty kill unit to the test. Despite being a man short, Saginaw's Kris Bennett battled back and notched a shorthanded tally for the Spirit, tying the game at three apiece. Connor Brown and Markus Niemelainen assisted Bennett's eighth goal of the season. Shots on goal in the second period favored the Windsor Spitfires, 14-13.
The Spirit and the Spitfires were both looking to break the tie in the third period. Thanks to a tripping penalty on the Spitfires, the Spirit was able to do just that. At 16:23 of the final frame, Saginaw's Connor Brown tipped a Marcus Crawford shot past Michael DiPietro to give the Spirit their first lead of the evening. An empty net goal scored by Jesse Barwell at 19:42 of the period wrapped up the evening's scoring and secured a 5-3 victory for the Spirit. Saginaw outshot Windsor, 41-26.
