Storm Chasers and Cubs Suspended

Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

Des Moines, IA - As they have been throughout the season's first two months, Omaha and Iowa were affected by weather that caused Friday night's series opener at Principal Park to be suspended in the bottom of the sixth inning with the score tied at five. The game will be resumed Saturday at 5:05 pm and played to its nine-inning conclusion before the regular scheduled game, which will also be a full nine innings.

The start of the game was delayed an hour due to heavy thunderstorms that hit the Des Moines area between 5 and 6 pm and it was eventually halted due to lightning along with the threat and arrival of heavy rain. Omaha pitcher Michael Mariot opened the sixth inning on the hill and threw one pitch to Luis Flores before the teams were taken off the field. After another delay of an hour, the game was finally suspended.

Iowa starter Brooks Raley, who warmed up in the Chicago Cubs bullpen on Thursday but did not pitch in the game, issued a pair of walks around a Christian Colon double to load the bases with nobody out in the first inning. Max Ramirez got the scoring started for the Storm Chasers with an RBI single that was followed by a two-run double from Brett Hayes and a Willy Taveras sacrifice fly to finish a four-run surge. The hosts responded in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run from Steve Clevenger, who is with the Cubs on a major league rehabilitation assignment.

Iowa got the game tied in the second with an Edwin Maysonet scoring fly ball and a wild pitch from Ryan Verdugo that allowed Darnell McDonald to cross the plate. The Omaha southpaw gave up a pair of hits and walked Brad Nelson to load the bases with nobody out in the third and was lifted in favor of Brian Sanches, who worked his way out of the jam with a pair of foul pop ups and a strikeout sandwiched in between.

Irving Falu singled with one out in the fifth to end a stretch of 13 in a row retired by Raley and created the go-ahead run with a steal of second before he advanced to third on a Christian Colon ground out and scored on a base hit by Xavier Nady. However, the lead didn't last long, as the Cubs tied the game in the bottom of the inning in on a Junior Lake sacrifice fly that scored Clevenger, who had remained on the bases in controversial fashion. He had singled to start the frame and broke toward second base on a missed hit and run before trying to return to first base. Clevenger dived back to the bag and appeared to have been tagged out before he reached it but it was ruled that he got back safely, ultimately leading to the ejection of Sanches and manager Mike Jirschele after the inning was over.

Kansas City Royals left-hander Danny Duffy will makie his second rehab start with Omaha in Saturday's regularly scheduled game against Iowa right-hander Yoanner Negrin. Coverage of both games gets underway at 4:45 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
