January 20, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Toledo Walleye News Release
(Toledo, Ohio) For the second consecutive night The Toledo Storm (18-17-1) found plenty of early offense as they hang on to defeat the Dayton Bombers (18-11-4) by a 5-3 final score in front of 5,069 at Toledo Sports Arena on Saturday night.
The Storm got on the board first when Matt Zultek tipped home a blast from Dan Watson at the 2:32 mark of the opening frame, making it 1-0 Toledo. Nick Parillo made it 2-0 at 9:31 when he stepped out from behind the net and roofed a shot on Bombers goaltender Adam Berkhoel (L, 32 saves); Mike Walsh added the lone assist. Dayton would respond though, with 16:31 gone in the period. With lots of traffic in front, Justin Maiser corralled a loose puck and took a shot that beat Storm backstop Mike Brodeur (W, 32 saves) to pull the Bombers within one. In the final minute, Toledo would regain the two-goal advantage, as Evan McGrath fed a pass across the slot during a 2-on-1 with Chris Blight, and Blight knocked it past the sprawling Bombers netminder to put the Storm up 3-1 through one period.
Toledo picked up where they left off in the middle frame, as Jason Maleyko fired a shot from the blue line past Berkhoel at 7:23 to seize momentum in the period, and a 4-1 score. The Storm continued to dominate the play, holding the Bombers to just 8 shots in the second period. And with just 90 second to go, Ken Magowan found a loose puck in the slot, and put it past the Dayton goaltender, extending Toledo's already hefty lead to 5-1.
In the third, the Storm saw a completely different opponent from the previous two periods. The Bombers came out flying and tallied with just 0:54 seconds gone as Yannick Tifu redirected a shot past Brodeur making it 5-2. Just a few minutes later, at 3:43, the Bombers pulled within a pair when Dimitri Chernykh got another deflection past Brodeur to make it 5-3 Toledo. After the early hiccups, however, the Storm settled down and thwarted the Bombers barrage of shots the rest of the way as they win it by the 5-3 score.
The Storm conclude a three games in three days stretch tomorrow afternoon as
the Johnstown Chiefs will invade the Sports Arena for an afternoon affair
beginning at 3:05pm. Following the Sunday game, there will be another
