Florida Everblades News Release
DULUTH, GA -The Florida Everblades (24-13-0) watched the Gwinnett Gladiators (24-12-4) collect a 3-1 win and move four points ahead in the standings behind the strong goaltender of Dan Turple on Saturday night at Your Best Rate Financial Home Ice in front of a crowd of 7,912.
After a spirited, but scoreless first period that saw each team fire 11 shots on goal, the Gladiators broke through midway through the second period. Jim Jackson intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and skated in on the left side, beating Everblades goaltender David Shantz inside the right post at 12:21 of the second period.
The Gladiators added to their lead with a pair of early third period goals. Brad Schell notched his 19th goal of the season at 5:12 of the frame by chipping a puck from the slot past Shantz for a 2-0 lead, then Andy Contois opened a three-goal advantage for the Gladiators by slipping a short-handed goal past Shantz at 6:38. The goal was Gwinnett's ninth short-handed tally this year and the fourth allowed by the Everblades.
The Everblades managed to chip away at the lead at 9:48 when Derek Damon collected his sixth goal of the season by tallying on the power play. Reggie Berg and Ernie Hartlieb picked up the assists on the goal. Despite their best efforts, the Everblades couldn't find the tying goal over the final 10 minutes of the period.
In goal, Shantz saw his record fall to 11-6-0 by allowing the three goals on 32 shots, while Turple won his second game in as many nights by turning away 30 shots to increase his record to 13-7-2.
On the power play, the Everblades finished off the night 1-for-6, while the Gladiators closed out the night 0-for-4.
