Stingrays Tame Jackals 4-3 In Shootout

Elmira, NY -The South Carolina Stingrays overcome both a two-goal and one-goal deficit to defeat the Elmira Jackals 4-3 in the shootout in front of 3,686 at First Arena Tuesday night. The Stingrays power play went 2-for-4 in the victory and Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford improves to 4-0 in his last four starts.

The Jackals lit the lamp first at 13:26 of the first period with Olivier Proulx's fourth of the season from forwards Chanse Fitzpatrick and Ben Wright. Elmira continued the pressure, but Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford shut the door to keep the score 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.

The two teams skated a physical second period, but neither side could fine the twine. Stingrays defenseman Nate Kiser tilted the momentum in favor of South Carolina by dropping the gloves with Elmira forward Brett Gallant. The Stingrays responded by throwing ten shots towards goaltender Michael-Lee Teslak. Ford knocked away eleven Jackal chances to keep the score 1-0 heading into the third. ]

The Jackals turned up the heat and grabbed a 2-0 lead just 55 seconds into the third period with a power-play goal from Wright. Justin Donati and Tyler Donati recorded assists. The Stingrays responded with a power-play goal of their own from forward Spencer Carbery with helpers from Josh Godfrey and Keith Johnson at 2:47. Carbery added his second of the game at 10:53 to tie the game at two. Defenseman Zach Tarkir and Ford picked up assists. The Jackals would spoil the Stingray celebration less than two minutes later as Maxime Gratchev netted his fourth of the year at 12:22 from defender Wes Cunningham and Wright. With the score 4-3, the Stingrays pulled Ford and drew a penalty with less than a minute to play for a 6-on-4 power play. Stingrays center Nikita Kashirsky won the faceoff back to Dylan Yeo who flipped a pass to Tarkir for the one-timer beating Teslak at 19:48. The two teams finished the period tied at three.

Elmira was awarded an early power play in overtime and generated five shots on Ford but could not burry the game-winner. For the second straight game, the Stingrays forced a shootout. Ford knocked aside all four breakaway chances and Kashirsky and rookie Rob Ricci netted goals for the Stingrays first shootout win of the season. The Stingrays finished the night 2-for-4 on the power play while Elmira ended 1-for-4. Todd Ford improves to 4-0 in his last four starts stopping 31 pucks on 34 shots while Teslak is saddled with the loss knocking away 30 of 33 Stingrays chances.
