South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays gave up two early goals to the Dayton Bombers, and were unable to come back as they fell by a score of 3-1 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
"Twice in the first period we broke down defensively," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "With the personnel moves we made, we were left a little thin, and it hurt us in the end."
In the first period the Rays gave up back to back goals in under a minute, both on breakaways by the Bombers. The first came at 10:46 by Ryan MacGregor, and the second came at 11:24 by Scott Kelman. Both times Dayton was able to slip past the Stingray defense and get in all alone on Josh Johnson.
The Rays were able to cut into the lead in the second period on a power play goal at 2:01. Marty Guerin got his 15th of the year from Chris Chaput and Pierre-Luc O'Brien. Guerin's shot hit off of a Dayton defenseman and ricocheted into the net.
The third period was dominated by special teams play as there were nine penalties called in the final frame. Though South Carolina had chances to tie the game up at two, Kelman managed to get his second goal of the game on a broken play, to make the score 3-1, the eventual final.
The winning goaltender was Rejean Beauchemin who stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Johnson who stopped 31 of the 34 shots he faced. The Rays went 1-6 on the power play while killing off all ten short handed situations they faced.
The Rays will be back in action on Saturday night as they travel to the Carolina Coliseum to take on the Columbia Inferno in the first game of a two game set. Game time will be at 7:05 P.M.
