Stingrays Stage Comeback, Fall in Shootout

North Charleston, SC - Trent Campbell and Maxime Lacroix both scored in the third period to tie up the game, but were dropped in the shootout 4-3 against the Mississippi Sea Wolves at the North Charleston Coliseum.

"I didn't really like the way we played in the first period," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "We got a very important point in a game where we probably didn't deserve it after the way we played in the first period."

The Sea Wolves got out to a very early lead when Ryan Cruthers got his first goal of the game at 3:34. But the Rays were able to respond less than two minutes later when Johan Kroll registered his first goal of the year. Kroll's goal came at 5:27 on the power play from Campbell and Pierre-Luc O'Brien to tie the game up at one.

The second period started much the same way that the first period did. Cruthers got his second goal of the game at 4:31 on the power play to give the Sea Wolves a 2-1 lead. They would increase that to 3-1 when Mathieu Melanson got on the board for his eighth goal of the year.

The Rays came out strong in the third period when Campbell got his second goal of the year. The goal came at 1:52 and was assisted by O'Brien and Steve Pinizzotto. Just after the twelve minute mark, the Stingrays tied up the game at three. At 12:07, Lacroix got his eighth goal of the year from Michael Dubuc and Kroll and sent the game into overtime.

Both teams had opportunites in the overtime period, but neither club could put the game away, and after five minutes they went to a shootout. In the shootout, Ryan Munce stopped all four shots he faced while Bobby Goepfert stopped two of the four shots he faced.

The winning goaltender was Munce who stopped 35 of the 38 shots that came his way. The losing goaltender was Goepfert who stopped 40 of the 43 shots he saw. The Rays went 1-5 on the power play while killing off four of the five short handed situations they faced.
