Phoenix Tops Condors with Last-Second Overtime Win

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Phoenix RoadRunners took home a thrilling last-second overtime win, 7-6, against the Bakersfield Condors before 4,858 fans at U.S. Airways Center on Friday night. LW Mark Derlago led the Condors with five points (1g-4a) in the game.

2008-10-20 weekly caruanaThe Condors (6-7-2, 14pts) exploded in the first period with four consecutive goals to jump out to a 4-0 lead through one. F Matt Caruana (right) opened the scoring 3:38 into the frame, and was followed by goals from F Matt Pope, D Martin Frechette and LW Mark Derlago. Derlago also registered two assists in the period, while C Dave Bonk notched three of his own, and Bakersfield out-shot the RoadRunners, 19-9, in the dominant opening stanza.

After a goaltending change by Phoenix (8-6-2, 18pts), bringing in G Craig Kowalski to start the second, the RoadRunners came charging back with three straight goals to make it 4-3 in the middle stanza. Phoenix out-shot the Condors, 18-13, in the period, but Bakersfield led overall, 32-27, through two frames, and entered the third with the one-goal lead on the scoreboard.

RW Chad Painchaud struck on the power play 7:19 into the third period to put the Condors back up by two, 5-3. However, Phoenix scored three consecutive goals in the period, taking a 6-5 lead with just 57 seconds remaining in regulation. Twenty seconds after Phoenix took the lead, Caruana lit the lamp for the second time on the night, tying the game and forcing overtime.

Both teams traded scoring opportunities in the extra session, and with the game on the verge of requiring a shootout, Phoenix D Dane Crowley netted the game-winner with less than two seconds on the clock, propelling the RoadRunners to the 7-6 overtime win. Bakersfield out-shot Phoenix, 47-45, as the two teams combined for 92 shots on goal.
