Checkers Fight To Ice Autism

Charlotte, NC. - The Charlotte Checkers are teaming up with Autism Speaks to present "Icing Autism" on Saturday, January 10th when the Checkers battle the South Carolina Stingrays.
The event will be a way to generate awareness, education and funds to help find a cure for Autism which is a brain disorder that is diagnosed in one of every 150 children in the United States. Fans can purchase tickets to the event by ----------simply logging onto www.gocheckers.com/fundraisers. A portion of every ticket sold will go directly to Autism Speaks and other Autism related groups to continue the search for a cure.
"Autism Speaks is proud to continue to grow its relationship for the Charlotte Checkers, by helping drive this year's first annual Icing Autism Event. The Checkers have a long history of helping community organizations and our partnership will help raise awareness and funds for autism," said Robert D'Amelio North Carolina community advocacy chair for Autism Speaks.
"I'm excited to be working with a class organization like the Checkers to bring awareness to local charities that do amazing work with Autistic children and adults," remarked Mike McBride, a local parent organizer.
"We are so thrilled to have been able to add this night to our calendar," said Tera Black, Checkers COO. "There are so many people that are affected by Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders and for us to be able to provide a forum where resources can be collected is just such a great opportunity. Further we look forward to utilizing our game as a means to educate our fans on the facts of Autism."
Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges. Autism Spectrum Disorders are diagnosed in one in 150 children in the United States, affecting four times as many boys as girls. The diagnosis of autism has increased tenfold in the last decade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown.

The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL.
