Stingrays Snag Defenseman Humphries from Evansville in Deadline Deal

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays, proud affiliate of the National Hockey League's (NHL) Washington Capitals, announced a trade today prior to the ECHL's Trade Deadline. The club has acquired defenseman Spencer Humphries from the Evansville IceMen in exchange for defenseman Brendan Ellis, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Spencer Carbery announced today.

Humphries, 23, is in his season in the ECHL. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound defender has skated in 54 games with the IceMen his season, registering 16 points (two goals, 14 assists) to go along with 82 penalty minutes and an even plus/minus rating. He served as an alternate captain for the IceMen. The defender split time with Greenville and Evansville last season, scoring 27 points in 72 games during his ECHL rookie campaign.

Humphries started his professional career in Prague with Lev Praha of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) in 2013-14, scoring two points in 17 games. He has also participated in the Ottawa Senators rookie camp before returning to Evansville.

Prior to turning pro, Humphries spent three seasons in junior hockey with the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL, serving as an alternate captain with the club in his final season in 2012-13, a year in which he scored 38 points (five goals, 33 assists) in 70 games. In parts of five WHL seasons, he skated in 194 games, totaling 93 points.

Ellis joined the Stingrays following his NCAA career at the end of the 2013-14 season. He missed all of last year due to injury, but in his rookie season this year, Ellis has notched 25 points (six goals, 19 assists) in 49 games.
