October 20, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC-South Carolina Stingrays Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons released the opening night roster for the team today. The Rays will play at Augusta tomorrow night to begin the season and host the Columbia Inferno in the team's 13th home opener Saturday at the North Charleston Coliseum.
This season's roster contains 10 players returning from the 2004-05 Rays, at team that advanced into the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Captain Trevor Johnson and second round draft pick Maxime Daigneault expect to play key rolls for the Stingrays this season. Johnson will have to lead by example to a young team that includes five rookies.
"We have pretty good balance on this team right now," Explained Johnson. "We have a solid mixture of rookies and players with experience. I think everyone is anxious to get the season under way."
Gone from the roster is 2005 ECHL Rookie of the Year Joey Tenute, who found a spot in the American Hockey League with the Hershey Bears. Also missing is familiar goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck, who has been promoted to the AHL's Bears as well.
"We worked hard to replace some key people and fill our needs in every aspect of the game," commented Fitzsimmons. "This weekend's games should be a good test for us.
The Stingrays will drop the puck on their 13th season of professional hockey tomorrow night. A variety of season ticket and group ticket packages are already on sale. For ticket information contact the Stingrays office at 744-2248 or log on to www.stingrayshockey.com.
