
Opening Night Roster Announced

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls, who begin their third season in the ECHL on Friday, announced their opening night roster. Some 22 players made the team, which includes 12 forwards, seven defensemen and three goaltenders.
Returning to the Blue and Orange from last season are forwards Darren Clark and Guillaume Fournier. Defensemen Chet Ferreira, Nikita Korovkin, Grady Moore and Jonathon Shockey also make their San Diego return in 2005-06. The Gulls have 16 new players this season, five of which were assigned by the NHL's Colorado Avalanche (Tom Lawson, Frantisek Skladany, Tomas Slovak, David Svagrovsky and Tyler Weiman).
The Gulls opening night roster is as follows:
Goaltenders (3): Weiman, Lawson and Aaron McKenzie.
Defensemen: (7): Ferreira, Korovkin, Doug MacIver, Moore, Shockey, Slovak and Andy Thompson.
Forwards: (12): Jesse Bennefield, Clark, Fournier, Jade Galbraith, Steve Hildenbrand, Martin Mandeville, Alex Rogosheske, Cody McLeod, Skladany, Pierre-Luc Sleigher, Svagrovsky and Brad Wanchulak.
Of the 22 players, two are veterans (Clark and Shockey) and eight are rookies (Bennefield, Ferreira, Mandeville, McLeod, McKenzie, Rogosheske, Thompson and Wanchulak).
Veterans are players who enter the 2005-06 season having played at least 260 professional games. Rookies are players who enter the 2005-06 season having played fewer than 25 professional games.
The Gulls begin the regular season on the road with a three-game set against West Division rival, the Alaska Aces. Friday's season opener starts at 8:15 p.m. (PDT). San Diego and Alaska also clash Saturday (3:05 p.m. PDT) and Monday (8:15 p.m. PDT).
San Diego will play four more on the road before opening the home schedule Saturday, Nov. 5 against the Stockton Thunder. Gulls hats and magnetic schedules, presented by the Window Factory, will be given to the first 10,000 fans in attendance. The Home Opener will also feature the sixth annual "Teddy Bear Toss," presented by the San Diego School's Police Department and benefiting Children's Hospital. All fans are invited to throw a stuffed toy onto the ice after the Gulls score their first goal.
