MacAulay to assist Titans
October 20, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ (October 20, 2005) - The Trenton Titans and Texas Wildcatters Managing Partner Rick Adams jointly announced today that Wildcatters Head Coach Tony MacAulay will serve as an assistant coach with the Kelly Cup Champions for the 2005-2006 season. The ECHL approved a Voluntary Suspension request from the Texas Wildcatters for 2005-06 under the league's hardship provisions as a result of the devastation of Hurricane Rita.
"This unique opportunity allows Tony to add to his coaching resume with the reigning Kelly Cup Champions and a first-class organization with strong ties to the American and National Hockey League," said Adams. "Tony worked tirelessly to place Wildcatters players for the 2005-2006 season and it is only fair that he also be given an opportunity to work in the ECHL during our one-season hiatus."
MacAulay, 33, was hired as head coach of the Texas Wildcatters on May 18 after spending 2004-05 as an assistant coach with the Toledo Storm, who qualified for the postseason with a record of 41-26-5. Prior to joining the Storm, Tony led the now-defunct Roanoke Express to back-to-back playoff berths. He was named head coach of the Express midway through the 2002-03 season and closed out the year with a 15-7-3 record. The following season, MacAulay led Roanoke to a second-place finish in the Southern Division with a record of 38-26-8. Tony's overall record as a head coach in the ECHL, including playoffs, is 55-38-11 (a .555 winning percentage).
"This opportunity will put Tony in the best position to scout, recruit and evaluate players for the 2006-2007 season," continued Adams. "Tony remains under contract to the Wildcatters and is committed to serving as head coach next season."
"I am appreciative to the way an unfortunate situation has turned into a positive for the players and myself," said MacAulay. "Coming to Trenton gives me a chance to hone my skills even further for the 2006-2007 season and I could not have this opportunity without the coordination between Rick Adams and the Trenton Titans. Although everyone involved is disappointed in not playing this year, I am looking forward to bringing our players back together and the opportunity that lies ahead for Texas in the 2006-2007 season."
A defenseman, MacAulay began his professional career in the ECHL scoring seven points (1g-6a) in 57 regular season games and appearing in four postseason games with Hampton Roads in 1994-95. Following one season of play in Sweden, MacAulay served as assistant coach/assistant general manager for a Canadian junior team and at St. Mary's University in his hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
In 1997, MacAulay was named head coach at DeMatha Catholic High School, located outside of Washington, D.C. MacAulay won four state titles and advanced to the state championship game in each of his five seasons at DeMatha and is the winningest coach in school history with a 134-55-10 record. In his final season in 2002, the Washington Post named MacAulay Coach of the Year.
