Steelheads hire Upshaw as assistant coach

GARY, Indiana (October 19, 2005) "" The Gary Steelheads have announced the appointment of former NBA and CBA veteran Kelvin Upshaw to the position of Assistant Coach. A native of Chicago, Upshaw succeeds Bryan Gates, who recently earned a position in the NBA.

"I'm excited to be aboard," said Upshaw. "I'm really looking forward to the chance to teach and help guys improve. That's what I'm all about."

During the 2004-05 season, Upshaw served as an assistant coach with the NBA's Dallas Mavericks. During the two previous seasons, he was an assistant with the Charleston Lowgators of the NBDL. From 1999 to 2001, he worked as an assistant for three CBA basketball teams, including the Quad City Thunder, the LaCrosse Bobcats and the Sioux Falls Skyforce.

Upshaw played three seasons in the National Basketball Association, averaging 5.4 ppg. and 2.1 apg. during his career while playing for four NBA teams, Miami, Boston, Dallas and Golden State. Upshaw worked his way to the NBA through the CBA, playing for the Jacksonville Jets (1st round draft pick, 1986), Rapid City Thrillers and Albany Patroons from 1986 through 1989. Kelvin has also played abroad in Scavalenni, Italy and Poland.

Upshaw played his college basketball at the University of Utah, where he averaged 14.6 ppg. and 3.8 apg. in three seasons. He shot 50.4% from the field over his career with the Utes. He played his high school basketball at Chicago's Marshall High School.
