Stingrays Name Captains for 2016-17

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC-The South Carolina Stingrays, proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals, have announced their captains for the team's 24th season. Third-year forward Joe Devin has been named team captain of the Rays, while forwards Patrick Gaul and Trevor Gillies have been named alternate captains. All three skaters will wear letters for the second consecutive season, continuing their leadership roles from 2015-16.

"Joe Devin is not the most vocal guy, but he works extremely hard," Stingrays head coach Ryan Warsofsky said. "Joe plays the game the right way and it's the way we want to play. He's a guy that players will look to all year and see a guy who cares deeply about winning and the organization on and off the ice."

Devin, 29, is the leading returning scorer from last season's team, totaling 41 points (18 goals, 23 assists) in 55 regular season games before notching 16 points (10 goals, six assists) in 18 postseason contests. The Scituate, Mass. native has earned the reputation of being a clutch performer, scoring multiple late-game goals.

In his first year with the Rays in 2014-15, Devin finished with 28 points (17 goals, 11 assists) in 46 games. He had already established himself as a leader, having been an alternate captain during the 2015-16 season.

Gaul, 26, is entering his fifth season in South Carolina and has become one of the most beloved players on the team by fellow teammates and fans. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native has had 20 or more points in each of his previous three seasons with the club while playing with a grittiness to his game. Before a season-ending injury late last season, Gaul had 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) in 52 games.

Gillies, 37, is beginning his 18th season of professional hockey and his second with the Stingrays. The forward dressed in 65 contests last year including the postseason, when he appeared in all 19 playoff contests. A native of Cambridge, Ont., Gillies is the only Stingray skater with NHL experience, having played in 57 total games with both the Anaheim Ducks and New York Islanders.

"We feel like we have a lot of leaders on this year's team," Warsofsky said. "Patrick and Trevor were assistants last year and did a great job. Similar to Joe, they know how we want to play. They're good men of character and are always doing things the right way. I'm excited to have all three of them as captains this year."

The Stingrays' 24th season in the Lowcountry starts Saturday, Oct. 22 at the North Charleston Coliseum vs. the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. The team will distribute free 2016-17 schedule magnets to all fans attending the 7:05 p.m. game.

Fans will also park for free in the Coliseum's lots during opening night. Warsofsky, who was promoted from assistant coach over the summer, will make his debut behind the bench as the seventh bench boss in franchise history.

South Carolina will also host its annual alumni game in support of former player Adam Calder on Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. The event will serve as a lead-in to the team's season opener at 7:05 p.m. The Stingrays will welcome some new and familiar faces, including Hall of Fame members Trevor Johnson, Matt Scherer, Nate Kiser, Dave Seitz, Brett Marietti and Jason Fitzsimmons, who will all suit up for the annual contest.
