Manchester Monarchs News Release

READING, Penn. - A three-goal surge in the third period gave the Manchester Monarchs their first win of the season in 5-1 victory over the Reading Royals on Friday night at Santander Arena.

The Monarchs (1-1-0-1) outshot the Royals (2-1-0-0) 39-34 in the victory, and went two-for-four on the power play, staving off five Royals power-play opportunities.

The Monarchs opened the scoring when Matt Leitner scored his 1st goal of the season on a power-play goal at 13:26 in the first period. Joey Diamond, making his first appearance of the season, skated to the left-wing circle and fed the puck to Leitner in the slot for a quick shot past Royals goaltender, Mark Dekanich, giving the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.

Cory Ward extended the lead for the Monarchs with his 1st goal of the season at 14:36 in the second period. Eddie Wittchow started the play in the neutral zone and brought the puck low into the left-wing circle. Wittchow threw the puck to the front of the net and found Ward crashing the cage to the right of Dekanich where Ward slid a one-timer low past Dekanich.

The Royals answered back to make it a 2-1 game when Steven Swavely scored his 2nd goal of the season just :50 seconds into the third period. Swavely received a pass at the right blue from Mike Pereira and skated in to the slot, sending a wrister past the stick side of Monarchs goaltender, Colin Stevens, bringing the score to 2-1.

The Monarchs regained their two-goal advantage just over a minute later when Derek Arnold netted his 1st goal of the season at 1:55 in the third period. Arnold found the rebound from a Diamond shot, and sent the puck past Dekanich for a 3-1 Monarchs advantage.

The Monarchs extended the lead to 4-1 with their second power-play goal of the night when Joe Pendenza recorded his 1st goal of the season at 5:49. David Kolomatis found Pendenza to the left of the goal where the first-year Monarchs center pirouetted with the puck before back-handing a shot past Dekanich's glove-side.

Alex Guptill found the back of the net :17 seconds after the Pendenza tally to put the Monarchs ahead 5-1 at 6:06 in the third period on his 1st goal of the season. Ward found Guptill low inside the left circle where he wristed a low shot past Dekanich.

Stevens stood tall for the rest of the third period, and recorded the first win on the young season for the Monarchs.

The Monarchs are back in action Saturday, Oct. 22 (7 p.m.), when they travel to Glens Falls, N.Y. for the first time this season to take on the Adirondack Thunder.
