Jackals Overcome Admirals in Home Opener

Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, NY - Daultan Leveille scored on a deflection late in the third period as the Elmira Jackals (1-1-0-0) topped the Norfolk Admirals in front of 3,510 fans at First Arena in the Jackals home opener Friday night .

The Jackals grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first period with Tyson Fawcett, who joined the Jackals this week after starting the season with the AHL's Rochester Americans, scoring at 5:14. Cole Martin found Kyle Rankin with a pass in the neutral zone and Rankin used his speed to race down the left wing before sending a pass to Fawcett, who wasted no time in lifting a shot past goalie Connor Knapp for his first goal as a Jackal. Rankin picked up his first professional point on the power-play goal.

The Admirals, who entered the game having been shut out in two straight games, got on the board and tied the game in the second period. Mike Krieg held the puck in at the blueline and sent a wrist shot from the point that found space through traffic and beat a screened John Muse to tie the game 1-1 at 13:59. Then former Jackal Mike Seidel escaped on a breakaway to give Norfolk its first lead of the season, 2-1, at 15:29 of the second.

The Jackals took advantage of a fortuitous bounce late in the period to pull even, with defenseman Paul Geiger, who was reassigned by the Amerks to the Jackals earlier in the day, snapping in a shot from the left circle with 1:19 left in the second. Rankin and Fawcett picked up assists on Geiger's first ECHL goal.

The Jackals nearly took the lead early in the third, but Rankin's tip in was waved off for a high stick a few minutes in. They persisted, however, and Daultan Leveille deflected a shot from Davis Vandane in from the slot to give the Jackals a 3-2 lead with just 5:22 to play in regulation. Norfolk pulled its goalie, but Muse held the fort and the Jackals won, 3-2.

Notes: Kyle Rankin's assist on Tyson Fawcett's first goal was Rankin's first professional point, in his eighth pro game. With an assist later in the game he also recorded his first multi-point game. The Jackals went 1-for-4 on the power play and have scored power-play goals in each of the first two games. Paul Geiger's goal was his first ECHL goal in his first ECHL game, his 10th overall game as a pro.
