Mallards Hold off Rush
October 21, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
RAPID CITY, S.D. - Pavel Jenys broke at 2-2 tie with 8:19 left in the third period and the Quad City Mallards (1-2-0) went on to defeat the host Rapid City Rush (0-3-0) 3-2 Friday night.
Jenys gave the Mallards their third lead by blasting the puck in off the post from the left wing circle after Hunter Fejes' solo rush had knotted the contest at two just 32 seconds into the third.
Vay and the Mallards did enough to hold off the Rush in the closing stages- even after Rapid City went on the power play with just under two minutes left and then pulled goaltender Austin Lotz (44 saves) to create a 6-on-4 advantage. Vay delivered the most vital of his 26 saves when he sprawled to deny the Rush's Brett Perlini at close range in the final seconds.
The Mallards had taken a 2-1 lead into the third after exchanging second period goals with the Rush. Lindsay Sparks scored the first Rapid City goal of the night on a rebound with Rapid City on the man advantage at 7:08 of the second. Sam Warning buried Justin Kovacs' centering pass on a Mallard advantage just over four minutes later.
The Rush was forced to battle from behind much of the evening. Rapid City first found itself in a hole when a power play blue line blast from the Mallards' Jayce Coyle sailed into the back of the net with just one minute and 24 seconds left in the first period.
The Mallards and Rush meet again tomorrow night in Rapid City. The Mallards next play at home next Wednesday night against the Missouri Mavericks. That game and all Mallards Wednesday night home games this season will face off at the special early start time of 6:35 p.m.
