GAME RECAP: Allen Defeats Atlanta 3-1 to Salvage Season Series Split
October 21, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
After a 3-2 victory over the defending Kelly Cup Champions on Wednesday evening, the Gladiators were in search of their second straight win in Allen.
After a back and fourth scoreless first period, the Allen Americans scored the first goal of the game which was the first time Atlanta did not score the opening goal all season. Chad Costello found Aaron Gens at the point who took a slap shot on goal that was stopped by Gladiators goalie, Matt Ginn. The rebound went right to Gregor Hanson who placed it into the open net for his second goal in as many nights.
Allen went up by two later in the second period at the 12:06 mark. Spencer Asuchak put home his first of the season when he deflected a Costello shot into the goal. Hanson registered his second point of night with the secondary assist on the tally that made it 2-0 Americans.
Atlanta finally found a way to beat Allen goalie, Riley Gill late in the third. With 1:29 left in the game, Thomas Frazee received a back door pass from Josh Atkinson and sent the puck into the back of the net. Blake Kessel notched his fourth assist on the year with the secondary helper.
The Gladiators would then trail by just one, pulled the goalie to try and send the game to overtime. Gill made multiple saves on the fierce Atlanta comeback attempt and Allen would add an empty net goal from Asuchak to seal the 3-1 win.
Atlanta takes two of four points from the trip to Texas and falls to 2-2-0-0 on the season while they remained at 4 points. Allen picked up their third win of the year and improved to six points on the campaign.
Road Ahead
Atlanta is now off to Tulsa, OK for back-to-back meetings with the Oilers as the two clubs meet for the first time ever. Game one of the two game set is scheduled for Saturday, October 22nd at 8:05PM at the BOK Center.
