Beast and Team Captain Brandon Marino Launch New Outreach Program

BRAMPTON, ONTARIO - The Brampton Beast Hockey Club and team captain Brandon Marino are proud to announce the launch of a new community outreach program aimed to assist those afflicted with neurological disorders ALS and Cerebral Palsy.

'Jerry's Movement Powered by #13 Brandon Marino' supports two causes that are very close to Marino's heart. His late grandfather, Jerry Marino, passed away from ALS four years ago in May and seeing him in his final days inspired Brandon to want to make a difference to those affected by these challenging neurological disorders.

"Seeing him go through that compared to how he lived his life before he was diagnosed was probably the hardest thing I've ever gone through," Marino said. "That's when I knew I wanted to give back. That was the gearing point of Jerry's Movement."

Instead of simply focusing on helping those affected by ALS, Marino wanted to expand his reach to assist those with Cerebral Palsy as well.

The name 'Jerry's Movement' is significant in of itself. Marino knows first hand that those with neurological disorders often have trouble with mobility.

"Seeing him go through (ALS) and not being able to move his hands, it was very challenging for all of us," Marino said. "It got to the point where he couldn't even communicate by blinking anymore. With both ALS and Cerebral Palsy, it's movement that's affected the most. I didn't want to choose a disorder that only I was affected by. I wanted to try to help people and try to support families in need."

This cause is something Marino has cared about since before his grandfather's passing and he is thankful to finally have the opportunity to move forward and make a difference.

"Luckily, I have the Brampton Beast as a huge outlet and a huge resource to get this program started. All the people in the front office have done a lot of work to help launch it. It's nice to have this outlet to use try to start something here in Brampton and hopefully it will grow beyond."

Throughout the 2016-17 ECHL season, Marino will be donating $10 to the ALS Society of Canada and the Ontario Federation of Cerebral Palsy for every goal he scores and is requesting that fans, community leaders and corporate partners do what they can to help support the cause as well.
