South Carolina Stingrays News Release

North Charleston, S.C. - Defenseman Garrett Haar recorded four assists and forwards Patrick Gaul and Braden Pimm each added two goals, but South Carolina Stingrays (4-7-0-4) fell to the Orlando Solar Bears (9-6-2-0) 6-5 in the shootout on the 5th Annual Hockey Heroes for Epilepsy Night at the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday evening.

The Solar Bears opened the scoring at 10:52 of the first period when forward Brock Montgomery lifted a shot over the glove of Stingrays goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (SOL, 35 saves on 40 shots) from the right-wing circle. The Stingrays responded at 15:40 with Pimm's first professional tally. Pimm caught a pass from forward Derek DeBlois at the right-wing circle and fired it under the blocker and off the post of Solar Bears netminder Maxime Clermont (W, 28 saves on 33 shots). Haar added the second assist. Gaul gave the Stingrays the lead with his first goal of the season with 1:57 to play in the frame with help from Haar and defenseman Drew MacKenzie.

In the second period, the Solar Bears evened the score at 11:39 off a great passing play involving forward Greg Miller and Mike Ullrich finding forward Denver Manderson for his sixth goal of the season. Off the following faceoff, Gaul snuck behind the Solar Bears defense and slipped a shot over the left pad of Clermont at 11:50. Harr and defenseman Wade Epp earned assists. Orlando knotted the game back up on the power play at 13:13 off a blast from defenseman Blake Kessel.

Forward Ryan Rupert (1:49) and defenseman Eric Knodel (14:17, power play) gave the Solar Bears a 5-3 lead moving into the late stages of the third period, but the Stingrays pulled within one off an unassisted goal from Pimm at 14:53. Forward Wayne Simpson buried the game-tying tally at 16:30 with help from Haar and forward Joe Devin.

After a quick overtime, the Stingrays moved into the shootout for an ECHL-leading fifth time this season. Forward Jack Downing lit the lamp for the Stingrays in the second round, but the Solar Bears picked up goals from Miller and Rupert to take the victory. The Stingrays finished the game 0-for-1 on the power play while the Solar Bears went 2-for-4.
