Mallards edge out Rush

Rapid City Rush News Release
(MOLINE, IL) - For the second time in as many nights, the Rapid City Rush and the Quad City Mallards battled once again, the fifth time both teams have met this season. The Rush looked to end their four-game losing streak in this early stage of the season, and would get no help establishing tempo in a wild game in which 13 power plays were awarded, 7 coming in the first frame alone. Despite the calamity on the ice, and a late comeback, the Rush would fall to the Mallards 3-2 behind 34 saves from rookie goaltender Evan Mosher and 2 goals, including the game-winner from Joe Perry.
In an awkward and crazy first period filled with 7 power plays, two goals would be recorded, with none of them coming on the man-advantage. Instead, at the conclusion of the second Rush power play of the game, Joe Perry led a three-on-one rush and sent his shot by rookie goaltender Etienne Marcoux, giving the Mallards an early 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the period. Moments later, with the Mallards on one of their three first period power plays, Dylan Clarke and Daniel Tetrault started a two-on-one shorthanded rush. Clarke's initial shot was stopped by Evan Mosher, but the residual rebound was slammed in by Daniel Tetrault, knotting the game up at 1-1 with half of the period to play.
The Mallards went ahead in another penalty-filled period, this time the second. On a rush with former Rush forward Logan Nelson, Johnny Rogic roofed a rebound behind a diving Marcoux to re-establish the Mallards lead at 2-1 entering the third period. By virtue of a deflection off of a Darren McMillin shot just three minutes into the third, Joe Perry notched his second of the night and allowed the Mallards to pull further away with a 3-1 lead, but the Rush would counter with just about half of the period to spare. Scoring his second goal of the season with 6:38 left in the game was Brandon Martell, taking a pass from Jesse Schultz off the faceoff to place the Rush within striking distance at 3-2. Despite an extra-attacker and many chances in front of the net, the Rush would not be able to complete their comeback, and lost their fifth straight, 3-2.
Etienne Marcoux stopped 27 shots thrown his way in his first start with the Rush, ultimately becoming his first loss with his new club (1-4-1 overall). Jesse Schultz recorded his 15th point of the season, assisting Martell's goal in the third (3 G, 12 Ast). There were 13 power plays awarded to both teams in total, with 7 coming in the first period, and 8 going to the Rush over the course of 60 minutes. The Rush fall in their fifth straight game, and are back in action next Wednesday against the Brampton Beast, beginning a five-game home stand. Puck drop for the first of three matchups against the Beast is slated for 6:35 p.m. MST at Premier Home Mortgage Ice in Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
