
Stingrays Ink Tyler Whitney to PTO, Jakaitis Returns

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Washington Capitals, have announced the signing of forward Tyler Whitney to an amateur try-out contract. In addition, goaltender Jeff Jakaitis has been released from his professional try-out agreement by the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolf Pack and has returned to SC.
Whitney, the brother of current Stingrays forward Steven Whitney, recently finished his senior season at Trinity College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) with 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists) in 27 games.
During four seasons at Trinity, the 24-year-old attacker had 104 points in 107 games on 41 goals and 63 assists. Before enrolling in college, Whitney played four seasons for Lawrence Academy and also spent time with the Middlesex Islanders in the EJHL, as well as the P.A.L. Junior Islanders and the South Shore Kings in the USPHL.
Jakaitis returns to the Stingrays after playing in one game for Hartford on Saturday night, a loss to the Charlotte Checkers. The goaltender made the start and made 18 saves for the Wolf Pack in the contest.
The Rochester, Minn. native's decorated professional career recently saw him tie the record for most career ECHL shutouts with his 25th clean slate against Brampton on Feb. 23. Jakaitis has been having another outstanding season fpr the Stingrays, currently top-10 among all ECHL goaltenders with a goals-against average of 2.17 and a save percentage at 0.920.
The ECHL CCM Most Valuable Player from the 2014-15 season, Jakaitis previously played for South Carolina during three seasons from 2012-15 and helped lead the Stingrays to a Kelly Cup Finals appearance in 2015. He has also seen AHL time with the Portland Pirates, Worcester Sharks and Providence Bruins during his 11-year pro career, posting a 5-5-1 record.
South Carolina takes on the Jacksonville Icemen Sunday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum.
