February 9, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Greenville, S.C. - Defenseman Drew Baker buried a goal and an assist to help the South Carolina Stingrays (30-11-1-3) take a standings point in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Greenville Road Warriors (23-19-2-3) at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena Sunday afternoon.
Baker broke open the scoring on the power play 4:55 into the second period basting a shot past the left pad of Road Warriors goaltender Jeff Malcolm (W, 31 saves on 34 shots) from the right-wing point. Forwards Peter Boyd and Igor Gongalsky picked up assists. Forward Dale Mitchell put the Stingrays up 2-0 at 7:35 with help from Baker. The Road Warriors jumped on the scoreboard at 16:34 when forward Andrew Rowe's shot from the left-wing circle trickled past the left leg of netminder Max Strang (SOL, 39 saves on 42 shots). With 14 seconds left in the frame, forward Bretton Cameron tied the contest with his third goal of the season.
Early in the third period, forward Josh Nicholls gave Greenville their first lead of the game at 2:32. Forward Patrick Gaul knotted the matchup back up and forced overtime at 11:09 redirecting a shot from defenseman Joe Lavin under the blocker of Malcolm from the top of the crease. In the extra session, the Stingrays fired six shots on goal and held a power play for over a minute, but could not sneak in the game-winning tally. Mitchell struck in the shootout, but the Road Warriors claimed the win with goals from Nicholls and forwards Kyle Jean and Michael St. Croix. The Stingrays went 1-for-5 on the power play while the Road Warriors went 0-for-3.
