ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Zach Davies earned three points, Gerald Coleman made 40 saves and the Alaska Aces buried the Stockton Thunder in a 5-2 victory before 5,857 fans at Sullivan Arena on Saturday to claim wins in both games for ECHL Hockey Heritage Weekend.
On a night where the Aces honored Wes Goldie by retiring his #16 to the rafters of Sullivan Arena, the Aces improved to 9-2-0 in the last 11 games and a 10-2-0 mark in the last 12 contests against Stockton. Peter Sivak (1g-1a) also collected a multi-point game to help pace an attack of four unanswered goals.
The pregame activity began on an ugly note. Just a minute into warm-ups, both teams engaged in a brawl on the Aces side of the center ice red line, and Dustin Molle (Alaska) and Garet Hunt (Stockton) were forced out of action following their involvement.
Stockton gained an early lead on Sean Escobedo's second goal of the season, 1:09 into the game but the Aces answered in relatively swift fashion. Sivak's strip of Andrey Pedan at the Stockton blueline led to the Aces leading scorer's 16th goal of the season, on a wrister from the right circle on Parker Milner at 6:42.
Mazzolini broke the 1-1 tie on a two-man advantage, jamming a wrist shot to the upper corner from close range on Milner's glove.
The Aces extended their lead to 3-1 on Jordan Morrison's first goal with the Aces, and his 12th overall of the season when he stashed a rebound from the goal mouth with 6:56 left.
Stockton came out of the gate in the second period with an 11-0 shots advantage, but Davies stabilized the Aces with his sixth goal of the year with 4:51 left in the middle frame for a 4-1 lead. Evan Trupp wired a centering pass to Davies, who buried a wrist shot past Milner.
Nick Larson drew Stockton to a two goal deficit, on the power play, with 8:30 left in regulation on a screen at the goal mouth from Landon Oslanski's point shot. But Ross Ring-Jarvi's ninth goal of the season put the game away on an empty net bid from center ice with 1:15 remaining.
Milner took the loss on a 30 save effort.
NOTES: The Aces scratched James Martin, Andy Taranto, Corey Syvret, Tim Coffman, Shawn Skelly, Mathew Sisca and David Eddy ... Goldie's #16 is the third retired Aces number, joining Keith Street (#8) and Dean Larson (#18) ... the Aces went 2-of-6 on the power play ... for the second straight night, the Aces wore Calgary Flames colors on a specialty jersey, while Stockton wore a New York Islanders modified jersey ... Sivak's multi point game extended his streak to 22 points in 12 games.
The two teams continue their series in Anchorage for the third game tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. (GCI/KFQD0.
