Stingrays Fight Back against Royals; Fall in Shootout

Reading, PA - The South Carolina Stingrays (7-11-0-2) erased a three-goal deficit, but fell to the Reading Royals (11-5-0-1) 5-4 in the shootout at Sovereign Center Wednesday night. Forwards Hunter Bishop, Chris Langkow and defenseman Tommy Cross each scored a goal and an assist.

The Royals grabbed the first goal of the game at 6:44 of the opening period when forward Kirk MacDonald lifted a shot over the glove of Stingrays goaltender Adam Morrison (SOL, 23 saves on 27 shots) from the top of the right-wing circle. Forward Evan Barlow made it 2-0 at 12:44.

Defenseman Denny Urban gave the Royals a three-goal lead at 7:08 of the second period with his seventh goal of the season. The Stingrays jumped on the board seconds later when Langkow fired a pass from forward Matthew Pistilli between the legs of Royals netminder Philipp Grubauer (W, 27 saves on 31 shots) at 7:41. Defenseman Kevin Quick added the second assist. Stingrays team captain Shawn Weller pulled the game within one at 17:33 with his sixth tally of the season from Pistilli and Langkow. Reading reclaimed a two-goal advantage with Barlow's second marker of the game at 17:44. The Stingrays responded moments later with a blast by Bishop from the right-wing circle with help from defensemen Ryan Turek and Cross at 18:26.

Cross forced overtime and eventually the shootout with the game-tying goal at 10:56 of the third period ripping a wrist shot over the glove of Grubauer. Bishop claimed the only assist.

In the shootout, Pistilli and forward Daniel Koger lit the lamp for the Stingrays, but the Royals slipped three past Morrison for the victory. The Stingrays finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play while the Royals went 0-for-3.

The Stingrays continue a three-game road trip Friday, November 23 against the Elmira Jackals at 7:05 p.m. at First Arena in Elmira, NY and return to the North Charleston Coliseum on Friday, November 30 against the Royals at 7:05 p.m. for Country Night.
