Wheeling Nailers News Release

The Wheeling Nailers came out strong on Wednesday night, and carried that start throughout the contest. Cam Fergus scored his first and second professional goals, while Christiaan Minella and Peter Lenes scored their firsts of the season as well. Scott Darling stopped eighteen shots for the shutout.

Wheeling got on the board nine minutes in, when Cody Wild carried the puck down the right side, with teammates crashing the net. Paul Crowder and Christiaan Minella both hacked at the rebound, with Minella scoring at 9:17. The Nailers led 1-0 after 20 minutes of play, while outshooting Evansville, 14-4.

Midway through the second, Peter Lenes lit the lamp in his first game back this season. Lenes received the puck at the top of the crease, patiently waiting, before sliding it in past Paul Karpowich's right pad. Wheeling took their 2-0 lead into the third period.

Just under three minutes into the third, Wheeling got back on the board again, this time, with a shorthanded goal. Paul Crowder won a puck battle in the corner, before passing to the middle, where Cam Fergus scored on a backhander from the bottom of the left circle. Fergus scored again later in the frame, on a two-on-one, this time, picking the five hole. Fergus' pair of goals helped clinch the Nailers' 4-0 victory over the IceMen.

Scott Darling stopped all 18 shots he faced, securing his first ECHL win and shutout. Paul Karpowich took the loss, allowing four goals on 33 shots for Evansville.

The Nailers will host the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday at 7:00.
