Stingrays Erase Three-Goal Deficit To Defeat Walleye 5-4 In A Shootout

Toledo, OH -The South Carolina Stingrays (13-6-1-3) defeated the Toledo Walleye (7-7-1-3) 5-4 in a shootout Sunday night at Lucas County Arena finishing a three-in-three road weekend. The Stingrays recorded three power-play goals and erased a three-goal deficit for the second straight night in the victory.

Stingrays forward Keith Johnson lit the lamp first with a power-play goal at 12:44 of the first period beating Walleye goaltender Alec Richards between the legs. Rookie Nikita Kashirsky and defenseman Dylan Yeo recorded the assists. The Stingrays finished the first period 1-for-3 on the man advantage.

The Walleye tied the game at 6:46 of the second period with a goal from Mark Nebus beating Stingrays goaltender Braden Holtby. Chris Robertson and Derek Nesbitt assisted Nebus' second of the season. Toledo took a 2-1 lead nearly a minute later as forward Evan Rankin netted his ninth of the season at 7:58 from Robertson and J.C. Sawyer. Walleye left-winger Mike Hedden made it a two-goal lead and 9:00 from Travis Ehrhardt and Sawyer.

Toledo continued the scoring into the third period with a short-handed tally at 5:10 from Adam Hobson and Maxime Tanguay. Trailing by three and midway through the final period of play, the Stingrays cut the lead in half as Matt Fornataro found the twine on the power play at 11:42. Defenseman Johann Kroll and Yeo assisted Fornataro's third goal in three games. South Carolina pulled within one, 4-3, at 15:27 with a power-play goal off the stick of defenseman Zach Tarkir from Gregg Johnson and Fornataro. Johnson completed the comeback at 16:58 with a blast under the glove arm of Richards. The game moved into overtime and the extra session was not enough to decide a victor, so the game quickly moved to a shootout. Keith Johnson was the only shooter to score and Holtby knocked away all five shooters for the win. Holtby finished the night stopping 33 of 37 Walleye shots while Richards is saddled the loss stopping 40 of 44 Stingrays chances. South Carolina finished the game 3-for-10 on the power play. Toledo ended the night 0-for-7.
