Elmira Jackals News Release

The month of November began and ended in similar fashion, with the Elmira Jackals attempting to set an ECHL record at First Arena against the Trenton Devils. On Friday, Nov. 6, the Jackals first game of the month, they tried to tie a league record of eight wins to begin a regular season. Their bid was foiled by the Devils in overtime, the first loss of the Jackals season. However, 11 games later, the Jackals closed out the month on Sunday, Nov. 29 in record fashion in a 6-1 victory, holding the Devils to eight shots on goal, an ECHL low for a single game.

BACK ON TOP

With the victory, the Jackals overtook Reading for the top spot in the American East Division, leading the Royals by one point heading into the ECHL's eighth week of 2009-2010. The separation from first to fourth place in the East Division is the smallest of the league's five divisions, with the Jackals only six points ahead of the last place Johnstown Chiefs.

TIFU TAKES CONTROL

Jackals winger Yannick Tifu recorded his first game-winning goal of the season in Sunday's win at First Arena. Tifu nearly outshot the Devils, posting seven shots on goal en route to two goals and an assist. Tifu notched both Jackals goals on Saturday night at Trenton, and has nine points (5g-4a) in five games with Elmira this season.

LEAGUE LEADERS

Justin Donati reclaimed the league's top scoring spot from brother Tyler this past weekend, although Tyler was inactive for all three games. The Jackals have now gone five straight games without the Donati brothers on the ice together, with illness to blame. Justin Donati is tied with Florida's Jacob Micflikier with 31 points to top the ECHL. Those two are tied for the league's assists lead as well with 22.

Brennan Turner continues to lead the league in plus-minus with a +19, posting a +1 in three games this past weekend.

The Jackals penalty kill is the best in the ECHL statistically as well. Elmira has been successful in 86.2% of its short handed situations this season, killing off 94 of 109 opponent power plays in 2009-2010.

ON THE ROAD

The Elmira Jackals take to the road for the next seven games against five different opponents. This upcoming weekend, the Jackals return to Charlotte for a game on Friday with the Checkers, and then head down south for Saturday and Sunday games with the South Carolina Stingrays in North Charleston, S.C. Elmira will also play road games at Johnstown, Toledo, and Reading before returning home to host the Royals on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 7:35 p.m.
