South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Toledo, OH - Seven different South Carolina Stingrays (12-2-1-2) recorded multi-point games and goaltender Jeff Jakaitis recorded his first shutout of the season making 30 saves in a 7-0 victory over the Toledo Walleye (5-7-2-0) at Huntington Center Wednesday night to open a six-game road trip.
The Stingrays kicked off the scoring early in the contest when forward Andrew Cherniwchan rifled a shot past the blocker of Walleye goaltender Jared Coreau (L, 17 saves on 21 shots) from the top of the right-wing circle at 3:03 of the first period. Defenseman Zack Currie and forward Chad Painchaud picked up assists.
Defenseman Jeremy Price gave the Stingrays a two-goal lead 1:59 into the second period with help from forwards Jack Downing and Painchaud. With 23 seconds left in the frame, forward Jordan Owens capitalized on a breakaway from Painchaud to make it 3-0.
The Stingrays added four more goals in the third period to complete the game scoring. Downing lit the lamp at 1:09 firing a pass from forward Marc Hagel over the right shoulder of Coreau. Forward Scott Campbell added the second assist. Before the faceoff, Coreau was pulled in favor of Hannu Toivonen (7 saves on 10 shots). Less than a minute later, Cherniwchan buried his second goal of the game from Painchaud and Owens at 2:06. Rookie Wayne Simpson netted his second goal of the season on the power play at 8:49 from Owens and Campbell. Hagel wrapped up the scoring at 17:11 beating Toivonen over the glove from the left-wing circle from Currie and forward Patrick Gaul. The Stingrays ended the night 1-for-2 on the power play while the Walleye went 0-for-5.
The Stingrays continue a six-game road trip Friday, November 29 against the Walleye at 7:15 p.m. at the Huntington Center and return to the Coliseum on Saturday, December 14 to take on the Orlando Solar Bears at 7:05 p.m. on College Night and Teddy Bear Toss benefiting Debi's Kids.
The Stingrays will wear special Clemson University jerseys and auction them LIVE after the contest. Clemson alum and two-time Super Bowl Champion Jim Stuckey will drop the ceremonial first puck along with Charleston native and "Survivor: One World" finalist Chelsea Meissner. Bring a new or gently used stuffed animal to the game to throw on the ice after the Stingrays score their first goal for the annual Teddy Bear Toss!
