Wheeling Nailers News Release
CINCINNATI, OH- On the night before Thanksgiving, Wheeling Nailers goaltender Mike Condon got his fill of shots on goal, but the net remained empty. Condon denied all 38 shots he faced, and Zack Torquato added a goal and an assist, as the Nailers picked up their second straight win against the Cincinnati Cyclones, 3-0 at US Bank Arena.
Midway through the first period, the Nailers got on the board first, courtesy of a power play goal. Jake Areshenko let a shot go from the top of the left circle, and Zack Torquato got a piece of the puck, tipping it into the back of the net. Sahir Gill also assisted on the tally, giving him points in seven of 11 games. Torquato's goal gave him a point in six straight games - the longest streak by a Nailer this season.
In the latter stages of the second period, Wheeling added to the lead. Matt Grassi took a wrist shot from the right point, which was deflected into the goal by Max MacKay. Torquato also notched an assist, as the Nailers carried a 2-0 advantage into the intermission.
With 4:52 remaining in the third period, the Nailers iced their victory. Scott Zurevinski won a face-off ahead to himself, before snapping a shot into the back of the cage, finalizing a 3-0 triumph for Wheeling.
Mike Condon was perfect on 38 shots for his first shutout as a Nailer and the second of his career. Michael Houser took the loss for Cincinnati, making 20 saves on 23 shots.
Wheeling was 13-for-13 on the penalty kill in their two wins against the Cyclones, and the team is now 6-0-1 in its last seven games, and 8-2-2 in its last 12 games.
The Nailers will conclude their five-game road trip on Friday night, when they visit the Elmira Jackals at 7:05. Wheeling then returns home, to begin a nine-game road trip against the Toledo Walleye on Saturday.
