Stingrays Add Veteran Forward Jared Staal to Roster
October 15, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC- The South Carolina Stingrays, celebrating 23 seasons in the Lowcountry and proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL), have added veteran forward Jared Staal to the roster.
Staal, 25, has over 260 games of professional hockey experience, including a stint with the Carolina Hurricanes during the 2012-2013 season. He has spent the last three seasons with the Charlotte Checkers, the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes. In 2014-2015, Staal scored 11 points (seven goals, four assists) in 63 games.
The 6-foot-3, 201-pound forward was originally a second round draft pick of the Phoenix Coyotes in 2008. After a strong junior hockey career with the Sudbury Wolves, Staal turned pro full-time in 2010 with the Checkers and the Florida Everblades. He's notched 36 points (17 goals, 19 assists) in 232 AHL games, and 11 points (six goals, five assists) in 33 ECHL games.
A Thunder Bay, Ontario native Staal comes from a hockey family. His three brothers all play in the NHL. Mark is a defenseman for the New York Rangers, while Eric and Jordan are forwards for the Carolina Hurricanes. During Jared Staal's stint with the Hurricanes, he was linemates with his brothers.
Staal was part of the Everblades Training Camp roster, but was released by the team. Due to the Everblades filling his immigration rights, rules dictate the transaction of him moving to South Carolina is filled as a trade.
Staal will join the team for this weekend's games and will wear #20.
The Stingrays open the regular season this Saturday, October 17 versus the Reading Royals at 7:05 p.m. The club is hosting Mother Emanuel AME Church Family Night honoring the "Charleston 12" impacted in the June church shooting. Survivors of the incident will be on hand, and the Stingrays will wear special Charleston Strong jerseys that will be auctioned off online with proceeds going to the children of the victims. The night also features a Magnetic Schedule Giveaway to the first 5,000 fans courtesy of Savage Law Firm and FREE parking, as well as an Alumni Game at 2 p.m. Tickets are for sale via Ticketmaster or at the North Charleston Coliseum Box Office.
