PORTLAND, Oreg. - James Stefan scored two in the first to lead the Portland Winterhawks to a 4-1 victory in their home opener at Veterans Memorial Coliseum Friday night.
Stefan opened the scoring 2:09 into play, sprung on a partial breakaway and besting Tyler Palmer glove-side for his first of the night. He'd add a second at 14:42 in the first, rifling home a powerplay to give Portland a 2-0 lead after one.
Jack O'Brien capped off a give-and-go with Josh Davies in 4-on-4 play 35 seconds into the second period to extend the Hawks' lead. Cade Zaplitny stopped the bleeding at 15:26 with a powerplay tally, his third goal of the season. Portland answered back just 1:42 later, as Luke Schelter tapped in a centering pass for a 4-1 lead after two.
Jan Špunar turned aside 42 shots, including 15 in the third period, to pick up the win. Tyler Palmer saved 22 of 26.
The Silvertips visit the Tri-City Americans tomorrow night at 6 p.m. Live coverage begins at 5:30 p.m. on KRKO.
