Wheat Kings Welcome Hitmen for Pucks N Paws Night
October 6, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
On and off the ice, it's an exciting Saturday night for the Brandon Wheat Kings and their fans. On the ice, they face the Calgary Hitmen for their final home game before a lengthy U.S. road swing. Off the ice, fans will get to experience something they never have before at the Keystone Centre.
Saturday, October 7 is Pucks N' Paws night, a night for fans to bring their dogs to the game for the first time ever. The game will include specific dog-friendly sections, treats and an outside area for dogs, and a tennis ball toss in the second intermission in support of the Brandon Humane Society. Full details on Pucks N' Paws, including where dogs are allowed to sit and where they can go when they need to go outside, can be found here.
"It's great," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "I'm a dog guy, and my family is in town this weekend. They have our dog and think he's coming too. It'll be fun. I think that people will get a kick out of it and hopefully they bring some noise to the building."
On the ice, Murray's group has the task of turning it around after a disappointing loss to the Swift Current Broncos on Wednesday, October 4. The Wheat Kings weren't happy with their effort or discipline in that game, so it's safe to say they'll be a motivated group when they take the ice on Saturday night.
"We need to be a lot better, it's quite simple," said Murray. "I think we as a whole were disappointed in our effort on Wednesday, and unfortunately, sometimes you have those clunkers. I'm really looking forward to our response tomorrow."
This season in particular, tough games can be very costly. The league seems to be very close, with the standings already tight in the Eastern Conference, which means fans can expect to see competitive games every night no matter who is in the building.
"The parity is outstanding all over the place and in our conference," Murray said. "It's going to be a battle night in and night out. You can see that there are a lot of one-goal games and it means that one mistake can end up costing you. I think, at the end of the day, it makes everybody better."
The game against the Hitmen will be the final home game for the Wheat Kings between now and October 26. After that, it's off to Lethbridge to start that road swing.
