Saskatoon Blades News Release

Calgary, AB - Saskatoon Blades Head Coach Brennan Sonne can add coaching for Hockey Canada to his resume.

Hockey Canada announced Friday the Maple Ridge, BC native will serve as an assistant coach for Team Canada White at the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge taking place in Charlottetown and Summerside, PEI next month.

Sonne is in his third season behind the bench for the Blades, boasting a 89-43-7-2 record during that span. The 36-year-old bench boss won the Dunc McCallum Memorial Trophy for WHL Coach of the Year last season after a 48-15-4-1 campaign. It was the most wins the Blades have earned in a 68-game slate, the third-highest winning-percentage in franchise history, and the quickest Blades team to reach 20 wins (25 GP). Carrying that momentum into the playoffs, Sonne helped the Blades reach their first Eastern Conference Championship since 1994, doing so in dramatic fashion by reverse-sweeping the Red Deer Rebels in Round 2, just the third WHL team in history to accomplish that feat.

Prior to arriving in Saskatoon, Sonne spent four seasons (2017-21) as head coach of Angers in the Ligue Magnus in France and three seasons (2014-17) as an assistant coach with the WHL's Everett Silvertips.

The 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge takes place between Thursday, Nov. 2nd to Saturday, Nov. 11th.

Congratulations Brennan, and best of luck next month out east!
