Idaho Steelheads News Release
VICTORIA, BC - The Idaho Steelheads began its eight-game road trip with a 5-4 win over the Victoria Salmon Kings tonight before 2,122 at Bear Mountain Arena. Victoria had a one-goal lead after the first period, but Idaho scored three unanswered goals in the second period and an insurance goal in the third, which proved to be the game winner. The win moves Idaho to within 5 points of the idle Fresno Falcons for a fourth place playoff spot in the West Division.
Victoria's Jason Hegberg opened the scoring at 2:37 beating Idaho's goalie Frank Doyle. Frank Lukes answered back with his 16th of the season at 7:15. Nearing the end of the first period, Chris Corrinet put Victoria in the lead on a centering pass from Seth Leonard.
At 12:46 of the second, a streaking Scott Burt outhustled a Salmon Kings defender to the puck and tied the game with a backhander. Just :44 seconds later, Lance Galbraith gave his team the lead when he picked up Bobby Russell's rebound and found the back of the net. Patrick Grandmaitre notched his first professional point with a helper when his point blank backhand shot was saved by a diving goaltender Jamie McCaiq and defenseman Jonathan Zion tallied on the rebound at 17:56.
Goal number five for Idaho came from Matt Elich who scored top shelf at 8:53 of the third period. Scott Turner put back-to-back goals on the board for Victoria with his 4th and 5th of the season. The first came at 15:16 on the power play, and the second was scored on a Steelheads turnover at 18:40. Victoria pulled its goaltender hoping to knot the game, but Idaho hung on to its one goal lead.
Of note: Center Patrick Grandmaitre and defenseman Omar Ennaffati were added to Idaho's roster today. Both are graduates of St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. Grandmaitre played his first professional game in tonight's contest. Ennaffati had played previously in the East Coast Hockey League.
