FLORENCE, SC -- Gregg Johnson tallied two goals and an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to six games, and helped lead the Pee Dee Pride past the Colmbia Inferno 4-2 on Thursday in front of 1,820 fans at the Florence Civic Center.
The Pride drew first blood 9:20 into the opening period. On a goal-mouth scramble, the Pride drew Inferno netminder out of position, and Johnson was there to slide a shot into the open net for his 17th goal of the season.
It took Columbia just four seconds on a power-play opportunity to draw even. Ben Knopp received a goaltender interference penalty at 12:33. Off the ensuing face-off, Matt Ulwelling won the draw, and the puck was tipped in front by Brad Ralph, whose deflection eluded Pride goaltender Sebastien Laplante, tying the game after 20 minutes.
The Pride went back on top 10:30 into the second period as Steve Hildenbrand raced down the right-wing side and beat Minard to the far post for his 13th goal of the season.
Pee Dee doubled its lead 7:52 into the final period with a shorthanded tally. Johnson got behind the Inferno defense, and beat Minard with a wrister to the stick side.
Columbia pulled back within one with 1:42 remaining in regulation as Walker McDonald gathered in a pass at the top of the crease and beat Sebastien Laplante with a quick shot.
The Pride iced the game with an empty-net goal off of the stick of Jan Vodrazka with 35 seconds left.
Pee Dee's five-game home stand continues as the Pride host the Pensacola Ice Pilots on Friday and the Gwinnett Gladiators on Saturday, with both games starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Florence Civic Center Box Office, or through TicketMaster at (843) 679-9333 or www.ticketmaster.com.
