The Fight of the Fish Continues…

March 10, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC – Despite the Victoria Salmon Kings record, the fans at the Bear Mountain Arena have consistently seen competitive hockey night in and night out. Apart from defensive mishaps in front of goaltender Jaime McCaig in the second period that resulted in three unanswered goals, Victoria had another solid team effort on Wednesday.

Salmon Kings forward Jason Hegberg opened the scoring in the first period only 2:37 in, on a beautiful set up from defensemen Brad Dexter and Chris Corrinet. Just over five minutes later the Steelheads came back though, when Jeremy Mylymok and points leader Bobby Russell, set up Frank Lukes, to tie the game at one.

At 19:04 of the opening frame the Salmon Kings had the Steelheads running around their own zone when Adam Campbell and Seth Leonard set up Corrinet's fifth of the season, and Victoria took Idaho to the break with the one goal lead.

In the ECHL, the competition makes you pay for breakdowns, and the Steelheads made the Salmon Kings pay dearly. At 12:46 Scott Burt tied the game at two and before Victoria could catch their breath, McCaig was fishing the go-ahead goal from the back of his net. It was Lance Galbraith's tenth at 13:32, and then at 17:56 Jonathan Zion extended the Steelheads lead to 4-2.

At 8:53 of the third, Idaho forward Matt Elich applied salt to the wound with his sixth and the Steelheads had the 5-2 lead. The Salmon Kings were not done with the excitement though. Scott Turner, whose play has definitely attracted positive comments lately from Head Coach Bryan Maxwell, continued to show why they are deserved.

Turner's relentless fore-checking and pursuit turned into gold for the winger who started the season in Peoria, and continues to take nothing for granted. At 15:13 Turner notched his fourth goal as a Salmon King, from Nate Forster and Dexter. Turner was thrown right back onto the ice and it paid off. At 18:40 Ryan Wade and Mike Josephson set Turner up for his second in less than five minutes.

Turner looked as if he was going to finish the night off in fine style with the natural hat-trick and game tying goal in the final minute. He had a couple of chances in front of Steelheads netminder Frank Doyle with the extra attacker on the ice, but it was not in the cards.

The Steelheads took the valuable two points and added them to their impressive run to the post season, with the 5-4 victory in Victoria.

The Victoria Salmon Kings finish their home schedule against the Steelheads with games on Thursday and Saturday. Tickets are still available for the Salmon Kings home games from www.selectyourtickets.com or by phone at 250-220-7777.
