Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads suffered its worst loss of the season to the San Diego Gulls Friday night, losing 8-2, at the Bank of America Centre before a sold out crowd. Backup goaltender Kaleb Christenson made his first professional start for Idaho, and the rookie faced 30 shots from the high scoring Gulls.

San Diego's Billy Tibbetts scored a quick one-timer from the right circle that got past Christenson a minute and a half into the first period. At the four-minute mark, Idaho's leading scorer Jan Kopecky knotted the game with a shot almost on the crease line that got on up high over Gulls netminder Trevor Koenig. With a delayed penalty called against Idaho, San Diego pulled its goaltender to rush in on Idaho's net and with the extra attacker, Dan Cousineau found the back of the net.

The Gulls started the middle frame with a one-goal lead, but Idaho tied it quickly. Andrei Vasilyev beat Koenig high glove side on a breakaway. Just a minute later, former Steelhead Chris Gobert scored, unassisted, to give the Gulls the lead once again. San Diego added two more before the period was over. Sylvain Deschatelets notched San Diego's 14th power play tally against Idaho this year at 5:32, and Gobert recorded his second of the night at 16:10.

Ahead by three goals, San Diego tallied its sixth on the power play at 6:48 of the third period. Dean Tiltgen fed Clayton Read who shot from the blue line. Tibbetts scored his second goal and fourth point of the night on a breakaway a minute later, and Mark Pederson extended his scoring streak to 20 games with the final goal of the game at the 15-minute mark.
